Pathankot to Dalhousie by taxi: distance, time and the route

Pathankot to Dalhousie is about 80 to 85 km by road and takes around 2.5 hours in a taxi. You climb from the Punjab plains through Dunera and Banikhet to Dalhousie at roughly 2,000 m. Leave in daylight, keep an hour spare in monsoon or snow, and you'll reach your hotel without stress.

Most of our guests start their Himachal trip right here, at Pathankot. The overnight trains from Delhi and the rest of north India land in the morning, the station is a short ride from the highway, and by lunch you can be looking at pine forest instead of platform boards. This is the drive we do more than any other, so here's how it actually goes.

How far is Dalhousie from Pathankot, and how long does the taxi take?

The distance depends a little on where you're picked up and where your hotel is, but every source we've checked puts it between 80 and 85 km. Cab operators quote 2 hours 25 minutes to 3 hours. In our experience 2.5 hours is honest for a normal day with one tea stop.

  • Distance: about 80 to 85 km
  • Drive time: around 2.5 hours, up to 3 with traffic or a longer break
  • Road: good tarmac most of the way, narrow and winding on the last climb
  • Car: a sedan is fine for two to four people; take an SUV in snow or with lots of luggage

Three hours sounds long for 80 km. It isn't the distance that takes the time, it's the hill road. The first stretch out of Pathankot is flat and quick. Then the hairpins start.

The route, stretch by stretch

Pathankot to Dunera: the easy part

You leave the town and run along the plains toward the first hills. Traffic is the only thing that slows you down here, especially around the station and the market in the morning rush. Your driver will want to get past it before the trucks build up.

Dunera to Banikhet: the climb begins

After Dunera the road starts to wind and the air cools. This is the stretch where people who get carsick start to feel it. Sit in the front if you can, keep a window cracked, and tell the driver early if you need a stop. Pulling over on a hill road takes a minute to find a safe spot.

Banikhet to Dalhousie: the last few kilometres

Banikhet is the last junction before town (the road to Chamba splits off here), and it's the natural place for tea if you haven't stopped yet. From here it's a short, steep run up into Dalhousie. Hotels are spread across the ridges, so your driver will take you to the door rather than dropping you at a bus stand.

When should you leave Pathankot?

As early as your train allows. We prefer to have every guest on this road in daylight. The last climb is narrow and winding, local buses and trucks use it too, and a bend you can see in the afternoon is a lot less friendly at night.

  • March to June: the easy season. Clear roads, busy hotels. Book your cab before you travel.
  • July to September: monsoon. Landslides can hold up traffic for an hour or more. Don't plan anything tight for the evening you arrive.
  • December to February: snow is possible on the upper part of the road. Some days it closes for a while. An SUV and a flexible arrival time help.

Taxi or bus from Pathankot?

HRTC buses run this route and they're cheap. If you're travelling light and alone, it's a fair choice. For a family with bags, a taxi makes more sense: it waits outside the station, stops when a child needs a break, and drops you at the hotel instead of the town bus stand, which can be a steep walk from where you're staying.

Our cabs come with the same driver for the whole trip, so the person who picks you up at Pathankot is the one who drives you to Khajjiar the next morning and back to the station when you leave.

Flying in instead?

Pathankot has a small airport with limited flights. Most guests who fly come into Amritsar, Jammu or Gaggal (Kangra, near Dharamshala) and we pick them up there. These are longer drives than the run from Pathankot station, so tell us your flight time and we'll plan the day around it.

What to send us when you book

  1. Your train or flight number and arrival time
  2. How many people, and roughly how much luggage
  3. Your hotel in Dalhousie, if you've booked one
  4. Whether you want to go straight to the hotel or see something on the way

That's all we need to send you a price. You can plan the whole trip here, look at our Dalhousie package, or see every trip that passes through Dalhousie.

Questions guests ask about this drive

Is the Pathankot to Dalhousie road safe?

Yes, in daylight and with a driver who knows it. The road is good but narrow on the climb. Most problems on this route come from rushing at night or in fresh snow, which is why we plan around both.

Can we go straight to Khajjiar from Pathankot?

You can, but it makes for a long first day. We usually settle guests in Dalhousie first and do Khajjiar the next morning, when you're fresh and the light on the meadow is better.

Distances and times above come from our own trips and published route guides (for example Savaari and HurryUp Cabs). Road conditions change with the weather, so we always check on the day.
