You can see Dalhousie and Khajjiar in one day by cab: Dainkund Peak early for the views, Kalatop forest on the way out, Khajjiar's meadow around midday, and Panchpula and Subhash Baoli on the way back. It's a full day. If you can spare two, split town sights from Khajjiar and add Chamba and Chamera Lake.
We drive this loop almost every day in season, and one guest put it better than we could. She came with her 13-year-old son, and called the views at Dainkund Peak "undoubtedly the highlight", followed by "the serene beauty of Khajjiar, the thrill of paragliding, and the peaceful walks through the wildlife sanctuary." That's the day, more or less. Here's how to fit it together.
How far is everything from Dalhousie?
Guides disagree by a few kilometres depending on where in town you start, so treat these as rough:
- Panchpula and Satdhara: about 3 to 4 km
- Dainkund Peak: about 10 km
- Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary: about 10 to 12 km, on the way to Khajjiar
- Khajjiar: about 21 to 24 km
Short distances, slow roads. Nothing here is more than an hour from your hotel, but nothing is ten minutes either.
The one-day plan we use
Early morning: Dainkund Peak
Go first. At around 2,750 m it's the highest point near Dalhousie, and the mountains on the skyline are clearest before the midday haze rolls in. There's a short walk up to the Pholani Devi temple at the top. The wind up here is strong, so carry a layer even in May.
Late morning: Kalatop
Kalatop is a forest sanctuary of deodar and pine. You don't need hours here. A slow walk under the trees is enough to understand why people come, and it's the quietest part of the day. If you're lucky you'll see langurs. Don't count on more.
Midday: Khajjiar
Khajjiar is a wide, green meadow ringed by cedar, with a small lake in the middle. People call it the "mini Switzerland of India", and the comparison makes sense when the grass is green and the sky is clear. This is where the paragliding, horse rides and zorbing operators are, and where most families spend the longest. Two hours is about right. Eat here; there are dhabas around the meadow.
Afternoon: back through town
On the way back, stop at Panchpula, where streams meet below a memorial to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh. Subhash Baoli, the spring where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose spent time in 1937, is close by. If there's light left, finish at St. John's Church near Gandhi Chowk and walk the Mall.
Is one day enough for Dalhousie and Khajjiar?
It's enough to see them. It's not enough to enjoy them slowly. Most travel guides recommend two days, and we agree. The first day for town and Dainkund, the second for Kalatop and Khajjiar with time to sit on the meadow. Guests who rush it usually tell us they wish they'd stayed one more night.
Add a day: Chamba and Chamera Lake
Chamba is the old town on the Ravi below Dalhousie, with stone temples and a busy chowgan. Chamera Lake is the reservoir behind the dam, with boating. Another guest who toured Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamera Lake with our driver Kishori Lal wrote that the trip was "smooth, comfortable, and well-organized throughout." This day trip is a good one for a slower third day, or for anyone continuing toward Sach Pass and Pangi.
Why do this by private cab?
Because the stops don't line up with bus timings, and the best version of this day is the one where you decide to stay another half hour at Khajjiar. With your own cab the driver waits, moves the car when you're ready, and knows which order beats the tourist traffic.
- Sedan: fine for two to four people in summer
- SUV: better for larger families, and the right choice from December to February when there may be snow
When is the best time?
March to June is pleasant and busy, so start early to beat the crowds at Khajjiar. Monsoon (July to September) turns everything a deep green but brings rain and the odd road block. Winter can bring snow to Khajjiar and Dainkund, which is beautiful but can close the upper roads.
